I traveled to the Lower East Side to visit New York based painter Field Kallop in her studio. Field is a kind, knowledgeable artist with a careful, beautiful hand. Her paintings are meditations on pattern, line and color and she utilizes sacred geometry to create mesmerizing, multidimensional abstract spaces. We spoke about the role of beauty, spirituality and the importance of craft in contemporary art, especially in work created by women. Looking into a selection of her artists books, we shared thoughts about decorative mark making, ornamentation and the diverse perspectives on these traditions across the globe.
